As the new Cultural Affairs reporter I spent most of my weekends covering these events for the CBS station. I remember attending a concert with pianist Peter Duchin and interviewing him later on.
He was much friendlier than Ferrante of the famed duo Ferrante and Teicher, who I met in Jacksonville when I was a kid.
Another great America Music legend I met on the streets of Jacksonville along with Mom the afternoon of the concert that we were going to see that evening – Liberace! He was so gracious to my Mom and I again unlike Ferrante.
While at CBS I also met Van Cliburn one night when another one of the reporters and I were having dinner. I immediately walked up to him and introduced myself and shook hands with him. I remember the reporter, Ron, saying before I shook hands to not use my bone crushing “Jaycees handshake”. So following his advice I did not but Van Cliburn’s handshake was a bone crusher! Of course it would be after years of pounding the keys!
