So who was the world famous “soul brother” I was meeting to escort around Gainesville before our WGGG sponsored contest?
They sent me out to the airport to greet James as he came in on his Lear jet. I was driving our new WGGG convertible and felt on top of the world!
Here came the jet on schedule and here came Mr. Soul Man off the jet. He spotted my convertible and asked if he could drive it to the motel where they were staying. This was way before James became the notorious car destroyer!
I said “SURE” and handed him the keys. He was thrilled! He told me to get the rental and drive the pilots to the motel.
Later I caught up with James as he was getting ready to rehearse for that evening’s sold out performance. He saw a nicely dressed young black teenager and asked if planned to go to college. The boy was awe struck that James Brown would even speak to him. The teen said that he wished he could but did not have the money for college. You have to remember this was 1967.
James looked at the young man and said: “You do now.”
That night James presented to the teen and his parents one of those blown up checks for the astounding amount of $25,000! There was probably not a dry eye in that baseball park including yours truly!
He was truly a legend of America’s Music!
