While at WGGG I had another America’s Music thrill that was just as big as the James Brown one.
My station sent me from Gainesville to St. Petersburg to go to the JIMI HENDRIX concert with backstage pass! Again I was on Cloud 9!
I arrived to the SOLD OUT performance and was escorted backstage like I was a VIP. I got to watch the entire concert of this musical genius including his signature smashing a guitar to bits!
Afterwards I got the opportunity to meet Jimi who was gracious and very pleasant to be around. As I remember I asked if we could do a quick interview with my 5 pound cassette recorder that always was with me. He said he would love to next morning.
Unfortunately I was leaving that night for the long ride back to Gainesville as the station had not provided overnight accommodations. They later regretted that oversight when I told them they had missed the opportunity for me to sit down one-on-one with Jimi!
Of course they regretted even more after Jimi’s tragic young death and so did I!
When I tell people that I spent a night with Jimi backstage listening to one if his last concerts they are blown away!
Next post I will discuss what happen music wise when I joined CBS News!
